Environmental Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary field that integrates knowledge from physics, chemistry, biology, atmospheric science, ecology, geoscience, and mathematics. It focuses on addressing environmental challenges through innovative engineering solutions and sustainable management strategies.
The discipline covers critical areas such as air pollution control, wastewater treatment, solid waste management, resource recovery, and environmental impact assessment. At IIT Bombay, our programs are designed to provide a holistic understanding that enables students to develop practical and impactful solutions for real-world environmental issues.
Since its inception in 1977 as an interdisciplinary program, and later evolving into a full-fledged department in 2019, ESED has consistently expanded its academic and research capabilities. Today, we offer a wide range of programs including B.Tech, M.Tech, MSc-PhD, and PhD, supported by state-of-the-art laboratories and research facilities.
We aim to nurture future leaders, researchers, and professionals who can contribute meaningfully to environmental sustainability and global challenges.
